Cachão da Valeira: the gorge that opened the Douro Superior
Before wine produced to the east could move more easily along the river, one major obstacle had to be overcome in the Douro itself: Cachão da Valeira.
Until the end of the eighteenth century, Cachão da Valeira blocked the Douro like a waterfall, preventing boats from travelling eastwards. For as long as that lasted, wine made farther east reached the trade coming down the river only with difficulty.
Cutting a passage through the rock
Between 1780 and 1791, successive works of demolition and rock removal opened and widened the passage. The intervention improved navigation upstream and gradually brought the territory to the east closer to the commercial circuits of the Douro.
The rabelo boats
Before roads and the railway, wine travelled down the Douro in rabelo boats — flat-bottomed, without a keel and steered with a large sweep oar. They struggled in the rapids, and Cachão da Valeira was for a long time the most feared stretch of the river.
Opening the passage helped to draw the territory upstream gradually into the commercial circuits of the Douro. Navigation remained difficult and dangerous — until 1883, goods moving between the Lower Douro and the Douro Superior still had to change boat at Foz Tua — but the obstacle no longer barred river traffic to the east. Quinta do Palato has been making wine since 2007.
