Quinta do Palato

In Muxagata, in the Douro Superior. Our home since the first wine, in 2007.

It all began with a wine

In 2007, Carloto Magalhães made the first wine with grapes from the property. Friends gathered around him and Palato do Côa began.

In the early years, the wine was made at neighbouring Quinta da Canameira. The project was discussed in a shed in Muxagata, over grilled chicken.

The vineyard

The property is called Quinta da Saudade. It has vines, olive groves, almond trees and pasture. The plots have expanded since 2008, at different altitudes and with different exposures.

The white varieties grow beside the stream, where they catch the morning sun later and reach the afternoon shade earlier.

The name stayed

Palato was a temporary name. It stayed. Mariana Castro Lemos designed the first label, with two Ps that became the basis of the brand’s identity.

Symbols of the partners’ sports came later. The Vinhas do Côa labels feature the engravings of the valley.

Our cellar

The cellar was completed in 2012. It has temperature-controlled tanks and a barrel room for ageing the wines.

Caring for the estate

We keep vegetation between the rows to protect the soil. While the vines are dormant, sheep help control it. The reservoir, built in 2025, stores water for drier periods and for the animals.

Where the grapes come from

Palato do Côa and Vinha da Migalha are made with grapes from the estate in Muxagata. Vinhas do Côa brings together grapes from two estates owned by the partners.
